No. 12 UCLA Opens Homestand Against LMU, MIchigan
Fresh off the team's first road trip of the 2023 season, UCLA returns home for a six-game homestand starting with midweek contests against LMU on Tuesday, Feb. 28 and Michigan on Wednesday, Mar. 1. The Week In Review
UCLA went 2-2 last week, topping Pepperdine on Tuesday before dropping two-of-three on the road at No. 5 Vanderbilt: UCLA opened the week with an 11-2 win over Pepperdine last Tuesday. The Bruins scored seven runs in the first inning to establish control, a rally which was capped off by an opposite-field two-run homer from JonJon Vaughns. UCLA allowed a run in just two of nine defensive innings, answering back to score in the bottom half both times. Seven pitchers saw the mound for UCLA, as Chris Aldrich (six-up, six-down in 2 IP) earned the win and freshman righty Michael Barnett (2 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) looked solid in his first collegiate start. The Bruins were blanked, 6-0, in Friday's series opener in Nashville. The Bruins allowed a run in just two frames, as Vandy did most of its damage with a five-run fourth. All five of the Commodores' runs during that rally came with two outs. UCLA tried to rally late, getting two aboard in both the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't get on the board. UCLA returned the favor with a 3-0 shutout win on Saturday to even the series. The Bruins hit a trio of solo homers in the late innings to go ahead. Duce Gourson broke the deadlock with a solo homer to left off a change-up in the seventh, and Darius Perry followed by smacking a hanging slider over the high wall in left for back-to-back homers. Kyle Karros added a solo shot in the ninth. Alonzo Tredwell led a five-hit shutout, recovering from a tightrope first inning to deliver five innings of two-hit ball. He struck out seven. Cody Delvecchio picked up his first-career win as he, Charles Harison, and Luke Jewett turned in four innings of shutout relief, collectively. The Bruins were edged 2-1 in a razor-tight Sunday rubber match. A two-run homer in the second proved to be the difference in the game, as UCLA could never get back even. Kelly Austin was outstanding besides the two-run shot, going 1-2-3 to start the game and retiring the final 10 batters he faced. He allowed just three hits over six innings. Kyle Karros doubled and scored on a Darius Perry RBI single in the sixth to account for the Bruins' run, but Vandy's Nick Maldonado shut the door with a three-inning save, including eight strikeouts and just one hit against. The Bruins won a pair of midweek contests against LMU last year, downing the Lions 9-5 on the road on Mar. 22 before capturing a walk-off 5-4 win in 11 innings at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Apr. 5. Mar. 22 in brief: UCLA used a five-run rally in the seventh to break a 4-4 deadlock and claim a road win at LMU. Kenny Oyama - a grad transfer for UCLA in 2022 after playing four undergrad years at LMU - sparked the rally with his first-career home run, a solo shot that came on his birthday to boot. Gage Jump made his NCAA debut in that contest. Apr. 5 in brief: A pair of dramatic late-inning home runs allowed UCLA to claim a 5-4 comeback win over LMU in 11 innings at JRS. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Karros popped a game-tying three-run home run to send it into extras. Most recently, Michigan won two of three at Jackie Robinson Stadium during the 2019 Los Angeles Super Regional, advancing to the College World Series. UCLA and Michigan met three times in the 2010s, with the Bruins blanking the Wolverines 5-0 on Mar. 2, 2014 (at the Notre Dame Classic) and shutting them out again on Mar. 3, 2017 at JRS as part of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic.
