NEW YORK — Authorities detained a man Monday after a U-Haul truck struck eight people in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge area.
Update 2:25 p.m. EST Feb. 13: New York Police Department Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the injured include a police officer who “was taking police action during this incident.”
Two people were in critical condition on Monday while two others were in serious condition and four had minor injuries, the commissioner said.
Police were called for a report about the truck striking people around 10:50 a.m., officials said. The truck “struck a number of people” before police were able to stop it near the entrance to a tunnel that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan, Sewell said.
“We are still constructing the events,” she said at a news conference. “At this time, we have no indication that there is any terrorism involvement in this incident, however, as always, we will continue to investigate this incident with the full resources of the NYPD and our partners.”
Authorities did not immediately release the name of the U-Haul’s driver. Sewell said officials were investigating any ties he had to New York.
Original report: New York City Council Member Justin Brannan said at least six people were believed to have been struck in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge section, including two who were in “very bad shape.”

People were struck at three different locations in Bay Ridge, WABC-TV reported. In at least one of the incidents, the U-Haul truck jumped the sidewalk, according to the news station.
The truck’s driver, who has not been identified by police, fled from officers after being stopped around 10:50 a.m., The New York Times reported. He struck pedestrians and one police vehicle in a more than 3-mile chase that ended when police were able to pin the truck against a building, according to the newspaper and The Associated Press.
The driver was taken into custody near the entrance of a tunnel that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan, the AP reported.
Mayor Eric Adams has been briefed on the incident, according to a statement posted on social media by his press secretary.
“While the suspect is in custody, the NYPD is still investigating,” Fabien Levy said. “There are no additional credible threats at this time.”
