Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s live coverage of the FIFA World Cup group H match between Uruguay and South Korea happening at the Education city stadium.
Son, deep inside the Korean half lets one fly in an attempt to find In Beom who is running towards the Uruguay goal but Godin covers him till Rochet comes all the way out of the box to kick it wide. Godin has been solid throughout despite being the oldest player on the pitch. Check out the youngest and oldest teams/players in Qatar WC
A throw from Gimenez finds Bentancur who links up with Valverde. The Real Madrid man puts in a lob and finds Cavani, he receives it but is not able to complete the shot while turning
A battle for possession in the center as both team loses the ball constantly. Uruguay should have been in the lead if not for the mistakes from Nunez.
64’ Substitution for Uruguay
Suarez OUT, Cavani IN
Nunez makes a mistake yet again. Godin sent it long on the left to Nunez and he runs deep into the Korean half, all he had to do was to find Suarez who was unmarked in the center but he took a bit too long to make his decision. Surely a chance missed
Only three Uruguay outfielders failed to have a touch in the opposition box in the first half against South Korea. Darwin Núñez was one of those. (Via Opta)
58’ YELLOW CARD
Cacares is shown a yellow for the tackle on Son
Son is down in agony as Cacares brings him down. Looks like the Uruguay player stepped on Son’s boot. Son trips and falls, medical attention is required but the Tottenham star is back on his feet in a while.
Throw for Uruguay on the near side. Cacares with the throw and he finds Suarez but Korean defenders converge on him and the ball is dispossessed
Corner for South Korea. The masked man takes it, but Rochet punches it away. South Korea players are appealing for a foul on Jin Su as he fell down from an apprent Bentancur tackle. Referee asks the VAR assistant and they come to a conclusion that the play can continue.
Gimenez to the rescue!! The Koreans looked dangerous for a minute there as Son on the right dribbled past two defenders but Gimenez puts in a timely tackle. Just perfect!
Sang ho is down after a Bentancur tackle, Korean players protest but the official thinks otherwise. The play continues
Second half begins
Suarez and Pellistri start the proceedings for Uruguay as both the teams hunt for a breakthrough. Godin’s men had a brisk 15-20 minutes towards the end of second half and will hope for the momentum to continue here
An electifying half comes to an end. Both teams had their chances, the biggest one came from Godin when his header hit the post. Diego Alonso will have a chat with Nunez and will hope for him to step up in the next half while South Korea will look to emulate the kind of performance they delivered in the initial half hour.
Just a minute added. A rather strange sight in this World Cup. In case you’re wondering Why so much injury time is added in Qatar WC? - Here is your answer
Bentancur finds Olivera on the left and he in turn puts in a superb ball to Pellistri. The Manchester United player crosses in an effort to find Suarez but Young Jung comes in with a slide to put the ball away for a Uruguay corner. Corner comes in and Godin reaches for it and heads it but the ball rattles the post!!! SO CLOSEE
Moon Hwan gets a thrown in and finds Son on the far left. Son puts in a long lob, changing the line of play and finds Woo Yeong but nothing comes of it as he gets cut off
Bentancur finds Suarez on the right, the former Barcelona forward makes a run for it but is dispossessed while doing so
CLOSEEE!!!! Hwang misses a sitter. The goal was wide open as Rochet was looking at the ball. Moon Hwan with a brilliant pass from the right picking Hwang perfectly but it goes in vein eventually
Both teams take a breather and play one-twos. Nunez could’ve made it 1-0 for Uruguay on a couple of occasions.
SO CLOSE!! Run against play this time from Uruguay. Oliviera is unmarked and runs throughout the Korean half and gets near the box and puts in a searching ball in an effort to find Nunez. But the ball is a bit too fast for Nunez and Seug Gyu collects it safely
The missed corner leads to a Korean counter and Son makes a brilliant run on the left, leaving he defense surprised. He puts in a cross but Godin heads it wide.
Intent shown from Uruguay as Valverde starts a counter and is brought down, freekick for Uruguay and the N0.15 himself takes it. He dishes out a lob aiming Gimenez but Korean defenders are there to avert the danger. Corner for Uruguay but nothing comes off it.
First big chance for Uruguay this game. Gimenez on the right puts in a cross and Korea is caught napping, Nunez runs towards the ball but fails to capitalise. Suarez tries to retireve it but the ball goes wide
Free kick for Uruguay as Oliviera is down after a tackle
In Beon initiates a Korea attack and finds Hoon Kwon on the right. But the attack ends due to a miscommunication and Kown hits it out for a goal kick for Rochet
Jin Su on the left, runs in deep as Pellistri covers him but Jin Su puts in an attempted cross but it brushes past the crossbar for a goal kick.
Oliviera recieves a brilliant long ball and his first touch is just what was needed. He then puts in a through ball in an attempt to find Nunez but Seung Gyu collects it comfortably
Uruguay players have properly man marked Son. He is constantly being dispossesed. This time on the left, two players converge onto him to snatch the ball away to safety
Gimenez error leads to a Korean counter attack. Hee Chan runs on the right dangerously but its the oldest player on the pitch who wins the ball. Diego Godin comes in clutch to stop him in his tracks.
Corner for Korea and Son takes it. He delivers one but the ball evades everyone inside the box, making things easier for the Uruguay defense to clear it.
Freekick for Uruguay as Nunez is pushed down by Hee Chan and this is also taken quickly. Another Uruguay freekick after Nunez is tripped again, but by Jar Sung this time. Nothing comes off it
In beom is brought down by Vecino and it is a free-kick for Korea. Quickly taken as Son collects the ball and tries for a through ball on the left flank but Godin is there to intercept it
Corner for for Korea and Jae Sung runs in as if he is taking it but Sun takes the corner eventually. He puts in a lob but it is driven out of danger.
Group H gets underway as Son gets the first kick on the ball. Korea creates pressure straight away but the ball eventually goes out for a Uruguay throw
The players have made their way into the middle and its now time for the national anthems. Uruguay’s anthem plays first followed by the Korean anthem.
Just under 10 minutes to go for this exciting fixture. Uruguay start its hunt for its third World Cup title while South Korea, the most successful Asian nation, will hope to showcase a giant killing act.

South Koreans will be anxiously awaiting news of whether captain Son Heung-min is available when they need him most, as the Asian giant starts its World Cup campaign on Thursday against a Uruguay side with a track record of deep runs in the tournament.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward sustained multiple fractures around his left eye three weeks ago and has been training in Qatar wearing a black protective mask reminiscent of swashbuckling vigilante Zorro.
Group H also includes Portugal and Ghana, meaning Son’s unrelenting threat and firepower against an uncertain Uruguayan defence will be vital for South Korea to pick up some crucial early points by negating Uruguay’s attacking flair.
South Korea coach Paulo Bento has imposed a team gag order on discussing Son’s state of World Cup readiness, hoping to keep Uruguay’s strategists in the dark.
“We should check and analyse day by day, let him come,” Bento said in the run-up to Qatar.
“We have time to make the right decisions and the best decisions for all of us.”
Son is eager to play, wary of the possibility of further injuries from a premature return, last week saying he was “more than willing to bear those risks”.
Uruguay is once again the dark horse of the tournament, with a squad that combines a trusted old guard of players age 35 or above, with exciting young talent eager to make their mark in their first World Cup.
They includes Liverpool’s record signing Darwin Nunez, who is expected to be paired up front with the ageing Luis Suarez, a key component in Uruguay’s impressive march to the semi-finals in the 2010 World Cup.
Nunez at 23 is 12 years younger than Suarez and fellow forward Edinson Cavani, who play in their fourth World Cup, as does captain and most capped player Diego Godin.
Among 13 debutants will be Real Madrid’s versatile midfielder Federico Valverde and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri, who link up with Tottenham’s in-form Rodrigo Bentancur in a midfield for which Uruguay’s squad has plenty of depth.
Coach Diego Alonso sees the yawning age gap as a boon and believes Uruguay could even win this World Cup, as they did in 1930 and 1950.
That could be a tall order and commentators have noted frailties at the back that South Korea could exploit, particularly in the centre, while there is no word yet on whether Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo is available after undergoing thigh surgery.
Uruguay has reached 14 World Cups and South Korea 11, but neither has a good record in their opening match, with the Asian side losing or drawing in their last two World Cups and Uruguay unable to win its openers in six of its last seven editions.
